Fireside Synopsis

Deep technologies—novel technologies that offer significant advances over those currently in use—are attracting an unprecedented amount of interest and activity. The aggregate global private investment in seven deep tech categories researched by BCG and Hello Tomorrow soared by more than 20% a year from 2015 through 2018 to reach almost $18 billion.

Deep tech is no longer the primary purview of deep pockets—or of the scientific community. A number of trends have brought us to a point of major change in how deep tech research is pursued and how new technologies are brought to market.

2 seasoned deep-tech venture builders will discuss and address any questions you might have about what it takes to for deep-tech innovations to scale and go to market. Questions that will be addressed include:

  • What types of partners do I need to scale my deep tech idea?
  • What are some of the main challenges facing technical startups?
  • What do investors like to see before investing in deep-tech startups?

Ernest Xue (Head, Hello Tomorrow Singapore)

Ernest is a venture builder focusing on deep technology innovations. He also serves as the head of Hello Tomorrow Singapore, on the Boards of and as an advisor to a number of companies primarily in healthcare and agriculture. Additionally, he acts as a mentor in a number of technopreneurship programmes. His work primarily revolves around helping highly technical innovations find pathways to market adoption and helping these innovators navigate toward successful exits. Prior, he was with a technology incubator listed on the SGX, where he built the venture arm as a JV with the National Research Foundation and worked on numerous transactions and exits for the firm. He was previously also on the investment committee of a Singapore-based wealth manager, responsible for over $1 billion of AUA.

Tow Xin Yi (COO, Slate Alt)

A reformed investment banker in the field of IPOs and M&As, Xin co-founded Slate Alt to address deep tech startups’ need for funding and commercialisation, alongside investors’ hunt for curated private equity investment opportunities.
